Coffee Gang - Featured Retailer of the Week

Interested to know more about the great independent retailers we work with? Every week we will be showcasing one of the fantastic additions to the Loyalli network. This week we caught up with Matthew Pearce of Coffee Gang in Swindon.

Coffee Gang - Featured Retailer of the Week

Matthew Pearce - Coffee Gang
How did you get into your business?

I qualified as a chef at the age of 20 and worked in a number of hotels before a change of career to computers, and then local government.  In 2010 I was made redundant and following a 12 month interim role as chief executive of an infrastructure charity, thought I would return to some form of catering.  After lengthy research exploring shop units and being horrified at the annual rents, I decided to leap into the mobile cafe service to office workers in business parks, and do occasional events at weekends and bank holiday Mondays.

Where can we find you?

I have no fixed address as my coffee business is mobile.
Ironically, I start my round at the local council offices where I worked for a decade (I knew the vending machine supplied disgusting coffee!). I then drive to 20 offices in the west of Swindon.  The real advantage to the service I provide is I take the coffee to the workplace with my barista equiped van, so nobody has to leave their company building and loose 20 minutes of the working day to get a decent coffee fix.

Find Coffee Gang here too....

Why that location?

West Swindon, and around the juntion 16 of the M4 is a boom area for business - but there are no decent coffee shops nearby, just a few greasy spoon vans.  With no obvious competition is was a no-brainer.  Its also close to my own home, so very convenient.

Every waking day is an exciting time for my business
What is your favourite item on your menu?

I just love the coffee - you couldn't be in this business without a love of caffine!  I use a colombian bean that is roasted in the north of England and is just the smoothest coffee I have ever tasted.  I drink it as a double shot latte

What is the most popular item amongst customers?

The best selling coffee is single shot latte with either a gingerbread or caramel syrup.  I also bake my own cake, this month the carrot cake is ahead of the lemon drizzle!  But in the summer the lemon drizzle was selling like hot cakes!

Do you have any exciting plans for 2013?

Every waking day is an exciting time for my business, so if it gets any more heady in 2013 I may just explode!  My business is only one year old, and I aim to keep growing my customer base for the next 12 months.  I attend a monthly Sunday farmers market in a neighbouring town, and want to attend more of these.  I attended a few music festivals with the coffee van this past summer - and have my name down for more of these in 2013 too.

Why did you join Loyalli?

My regular customers suggested I introduce a loyalty card, and in my research I stumbled across Loyalli through Twitter.  I just loved the simplicty of scanning a QR code with your smart phone.  I used to carry seven (yes really!) coffee shop loyalty cards in my wallet and thought a card on my iPhone was just awesome... My customers love it too - indeed, at some offices I think the guys enjoying zapping the code almost as much as the satisfaction of drinking my coffee :)
